In our Beautifully Crafted series, we talk to inspirational women about personal health, and how they incorporate wellness into their hectic lifestyle. We are pretty serious about sleep cycles over here at Niche HQ-our Sleep Tea is award winning! We spoke to Jana Bakunina VC, about her sleep routine.

What time do you go to bed and wake up?

I go to bed at about 10:30pm and have about 8 – 8 ½ hours of sleep on average. I am pretty military about getting 8 hours so if I missed out on good sleep one night, I try to make an effort to go to bed early the next day.

What is your night time routine?

I am afraid I often check social media before tucking in… I know, shocking! I also often switch on a sleep sound by Headspace. Snooze sleep sound is my current favourite.

Describe your perfect night’s sleep

Cool bedroom , fresh sheets, warm duvet and the sound of the sea…

What helps you get to sleep and what tips do you have for when you can’t get to sleep?

I am lucky: I fall asleep fairly easily and I sleep soundly. If I ever wake up in the middle of the night, it drives me nuts! In terms of tips, have a warm shower before going to bed, don’t have coffee in the afternoon, try not to drink alcohol late at night and don’t eat late either. Garlic in the evening is an especially serious offender!

Why is sleep so important to you?

When I travel, I always try to go to bed extra early because I want to explore new places and make the most of the daytime, be it spending an active day outdoors or sightseeing. I also find that the busiest tourist places are at their best in the morning when tourists are still asleep and you can have the place to yourself. As such, sleep is my best-kept secret when it comes to making the most of my travels.

How does sleep help you be the best version of you?

Sleep is more important than anything else – diet or exercise – for physical and mental health. I literally cannot function on insufficient sleep. I highly recommend reading Matthew Walker’s book Why We Sleep on the science of sleep. It’s life-changing.
